This part of our recap focuses on Kingdom Hearts 2, which begins a year after the events of Chain of Memories. By never sacrificing its own narrative integrity, Kingdom Hearts II can truly be called the best Kingdom Hearts game.Three years after the first game was released for the PlayStation 2, the long awaited sequel to the original Kingdom Hearts arrived in Japan, and was followed a year later by it’s Western release. This is the game that set up another decade of stories in which these characters have developed even further. However, even though it serves to set up the larger world, it still manages to tell a standalone story where its heroes grow, change and mature. Kingdom Hearts II delivers on introducing a multitude of new characters and stories that eventually branch off into other titles. Plus, the worlds are even more detailed, making exploration a nostalgic experience, like running through Pride Rock as a lion cub. However, what makes these worlds so unique is that, even with the emotional impact of the film's events still intact, the interactions between Sora and his friends contribute more heart to the characters. Each Disney world is visited two or more times, and in that time, players experience a layered story that parallels the events of each film. Kingdom Hearts II has a total of 15 worlds, 12 of which are based on Disney franchises. ![]()
